Senior Staff
Dirk Alvarado
Executive Director
Dirk Alvarado was named the Executive Director for Sonrisas Community Dental Clinic in January 2012. In this capacity he oversees the administrative, fundraising, and financial aspects of the agency and provides oversight and support to the Dental Director and Education Manager. Additionally, Dirk is responsible for collaborating with community partners and monitors the factors that impact local health services. In partnership with the Board, he guides the strategic decisions for the organization.
Working in the social services field for sixteen years, Dirk has had the opportunity to bring resources and people together to provide services and opportunities to underserved populations that may have otherwise not had access to previously. A strong believer in the strength of collaboration, Dirk has consistently pushed down barriers while building infrastructure that could sustain the collaborative campaigns. Through strategic planning and hands on implementation, Dirk has consistently searched for ways to maximize participation and access to vital programs and services. In addition to his experience, he received his master’s degree in administration from San Francisco State University.
Torrey Rothstein, D.D.S
Dental Director
Dr. Torrey has been an associate dentist at Sonrisas Dental Center since 2006. As Dental Director, he oversees all aspects of patient care, the clinic's quality assurance plan, improvements to services and programs, as well as compliance with state and local safety controls. He is in constant contact with clinic staff and volunteers on treatment planning, care options, and patient flow. He is the primary advisor to the Sonrisas Board of Directors on dental equipment, treatment, patient education, and facility infrastructure.
Dr. Torrey is a graduate of the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco and also holds a Bachelors of Science Degree in Animal Physiology and Neuroscience from the University of California San Diego. He is a member of the American Dental Association, the California Dental Association, and the San Mateo County Dental Society.

Nigel Taverner, President
Nigel Taverner
President, Board of Directors
Nigel Taverner has been a member of the Sonrisas Board since 2006 and Vice President since 2008. A career management consultant, he leads many of the Sonrisas information presentations and strategy sessions and applies a business perspective to the Clinic's activities. Currently with IBM, his role is to supply technology services to financial institutions on the West Coast. Nigel and his wife have lived on the Coastside for eight years, having migrated from the UK.
Andrea Hayes
Vice President, Board of Directors
Andrea Hayes has been involved with Sonrisas since 2008 and recently accepted the position of Vice President. An MBA by training, she was a risk manager for several Silicon Valley companies before turning her focus to healthcare advocacy. She brings an understanding of current state and federal health care reform proposals, patient advocacy and patient advocacy group operations. She speaks on panels around the country on both diagnostic and quality of life issues faced by people with chronic illness. Co-founder of the California Chronic Care Coalition, she has a passion for “keeping the patient first.” She and her husband have lived in Half Moon Bay for 24 years.
Julia O'Daly
Secretary, Board of Directors
Julia, Secretary, brings a strong business background to the Sonrisas Board and Executive Committee.. With a strong acumen for business strategy from her extensive career as a high level marketing manager for Hughes Electronics, Julia brings vital skills to Sonrisas and several other local nonprofit organizations on the Coastside. She has also had national nonprofit experience serving as President of the National Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) organization. She and her family live in Half Moon Bay.
Don Pretre, Treasurer

Before his retirement Don was Executive Director of Western Medical Associates (WMA) in Santa Cruz. The company provided medical services and was comprised of thirty-four doctors specializing in internal medicine, family practice, pediatrics, general surgery and 24/7 hospital services (hospitalists) with six locations throughout the Santa Cruz County. Earning his MBA from Texas State University, Don and his wife have lived in the Bay Area since 1962. Married 49 years they have two sons and three grandchildren. Don joined the Sonrisas board in 2009.
Judy Macias
Board of Directors
Judy Macias 'interest and involvement in the non-profit world and volunteerism started early. As a teenager, she was a member of the board of directors of a children's shelter in New York City which raised funds by sponsoring charter flights to Europe. In San Mateo County and on the San Mateo County Coastside, her focus has been social welfare, volunteers and community health. Judy was inducted into the San Mateo County Women's Hall of Fame in 2000 which acknowledged her professional and volunteer experience and service to the Coastside.
From 1980-85, Judy was Executive Director of the Coastside Opportunity Center and for many years, Manager of Community Health for Seton Medical Center and Seton Medical Center Coastside. In that role, she was also Administrator for two free RotaCare Clinics providing health care to uninsured people. At that time, she saw the need for dental care for uninsured low-income residents and, proudly, was one of the founders of Sonrisas Community Dental Center.
